Drug Donation Guidelines

We are always grateful to receive donations from individuals and organisations for the patients of The Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital, Banjul, The Gambia. We aim to use all donated medicines in the most appropriate way possible.

To ensure the hospital receives medicines that are safe and can be put to the best use for the needs of the patients, we ask donors to liase with the head of the pharmacy department (please click here for contact information for RVTH) to discuss any drug donations. This will also minimise wastage and the accompanied costs of sorting and destruction.

In accordance with the guidelines produced by the World Health Organisation we ask that donated medicines should comply with the following:

  • Have at least six months left before the expiry date
  • Should not be medicines that have been returned from patients
  • Should not be professional samples
  • Should be unopened or complete packs
  • Should be approved for use by the recipient country
  • Ideally should be on The Gambian or WHO essential drug list (Click here for the list)
  • Are labelled in an identifiable language with the following information:
    • Name of medicine
    • Strength
    • Batch Number
    • Manufacturer
    • Quantity
    • Expiry date
    • Storage conditions
    • Dosage form

For more information about these guidelines and the WHO essential drug list please go to: http://www.who.int/.

Please click here to see a copy of the commonly used drugs which are recommended in The Gambia Standard Drug Treatment Guidelines.

If possible we ask that donations should be in the largest pack size possible as this is more practical for all parties and promotes sustainability.
