We are always grateful to receive donations from individuals and
organisations for the patients of The Royal Victoria Teaching
Hospital, Banjul, The Gambia. We aim to use all donated medicines in
the most appropriate way possible.
To ensure the hospital
receives medicines that are safe and can be put to the best use for
the needs of the patients, we ask donors to liase with the head of
the pharmacy department (please click here
for contact information for RVTH) to discuss any drug donations.
This will also minimise wastage and the accompanied costs of sorting
and destruction.
In accordance with the guidelines produced by the World
Health Organisation we ask that donated medicines should comply with
the following:
Have at least six months left before the expiry date
Should not be medicines that have been returned from patients
Should not be professional samples
Should be unopened or complete packs
Should be approved for use by the recipient country
Ideally should be on The Gambian or WHO essential drug list

Are labelled in an identifiable language with the following
information:
Name of medicine
Strength
Batch Number
Manufacturer
Quantity
Expiry date
Storage conditions
Dosage form

If possible we ask that donations should be in the largest pack
size possible as this is more practical for all parties and promotes
sustainability.
