Improvements at Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital

Recent Happenings

The following pictures show some of our new facilities:

The Standard Chartered Paediatric Wing, with staff accommodation above the wards, was officially opened by HE Dr Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh, President of the Republic of The Gambia on 23rd July 2004.

The Comfort Dawodu A&E Department funded by Mrs Faith Cole Mbolo has been completely refurbished and is almost doubled in size - we now have an A&E Department that we can really be proud of.

A complete refurbishment of the Sanatorium was completed in 2008, funded by the Trust Bank Limited. The Vice President, Dr Isatou Njie Saidy, officially opened the new Sanatorium on 21st February 2008.

The Library is now a very spacious and peaceful place to study in, but we still need reference books, medical journals and more computers.

The new Pharmacy and Accounts Department.

There have been many other improvements too, including a new teaching laboratory and a lecture theatre for medical students, a new Dental Clinic, a refurbished Intensive Care Unit, and new Blood Bank.

New Conference Facility

We also have our new Conference Hall, which can seat up to 55 delegates and has split level air-conditioning, which is proving very useful and which we hire out to bring in more money for the hospital. If you would like to rent out the conference room (rate D1000/day for government institutions, D1500 otherwise), please call Mr Koma at RVTH on 4229105 or click here.

Organisational Developments

But it hasn't just been a building programme that has been going on – much more has been going on in the way we care for patients and also in how we manage and organize the activities in the hospital – some of these developments include:

  • New facilities, including ICU, A&E, Haemodialysis Unit, CT Scanner, Mammography and new Out Patients Clinics.
  • Introduction of our Infection Control Programme / Training.
  • The setting up of a Clinical Governance Framework.
  • The creation of the post of Department Matron – to decentralize authority/commitment and the decentralization of Nursing Services.
  • Continuing medical education - to raise standards and improve skills.

In February 2008 the foundation stone was laid for the new purpose built Psychiatric Unit, which is due to be completed by early 2009.

On-Going Training

Clinical Training

The Ophthalmic Training Centre for the West African Sub-Region is based at RVTH. Amongst the last group of eleven students were two Gambians, Fabakary Kinteh and Ousman Jallow. Fabakary won the prize for "The Best Cataract Surgeon."

We also run other training courses, including one for Laboratory Assistants, and another for Dispensing Assistants in our Pharmacy – RVTH is the only place for such training schemes in The Gambia.

We run our own training scheme for Nurse Attendants, which is providing basic clinical and nursing skills to our staff who have the most contact with patients. This very successful course is spearheaded by Mr Baboucarr Ngum, our Training Manager.

Mr Ngum with Momodou Jallow and Malang Bajan of the Nurse Attendant Training Team.

Non-Clinical Training

Forty of RVTH's top managers recently went on a management training course held at RVTH. The tutors were from Jollof Tutors, one of the leading Training Companies in The Gambia. To contact Jollof Tutors, call 9904904 or click here. Topics covered included Motivation, Communication, Performance Management, Authority, Responsibility and Delegation and Effective Resource Management.

Development of New/Local Treatments

"Bixa" is an ointment we have developed with the Cuban Pharmacists. It is so successful, particularly in the treatment of burns, that we are now producing our own Bixa on site.

We also produce our own Eye Drops - cheaper and more effective than buying elsewhere.
